Quick Guide on the 3 Types of Craft Vinyl

Hey there, crafters!

Today I’m going to teach you about the 3 main types of crafting vinyls most commonly worked with, their differences, and how to use them! While working at Hobby Lobby in the Paper Crafts department, I have gotten a lot of questions from customers asking about the rolls of vinyl and the differences between each type. A lot of them are new to the Cricut and Silhouette world, but sometimes, I get people who have been working with one particular kind of vinyl, and then they want to branch out and try new projects and they don’t know which vinyl to use.

That’s where I come in!

Whether you’re an expert or just getting started, this guide will help you.

1.HTV/Iron On

Probably the most common vinyl used is what is called HTV (or heat transfer vinyl). This is the vinyl that goes on fabric like clothing, bags, canvases, etc. You can also use this vinyl on wood. Unlike the other 2 vinyls, this one does not have an adhesive backing. To use this vinyl, you need a heat press (or a household iron, although I don’t recommend it-more on that in my next blog.) It adheres to the fabric when heated. There’s other things you need to know before working with this vinyl, but I’ll cover that in my next blog.

2.Permanent Vinyl

Permanent vinyl is pretty self explanatory. It’s vinyl you can use for any project where you want the vinyl to permanently stay. It has an adhesive backing and simply sticks to the most hard surfaces. This vinyl is not for fabric. Examples of when to use this type include car decals, wood crafts, mailboxes, signs, kitchen utensils, etc. Basically anything you want to decorate or label that you don’t plan on removing.

3.Removable Vinyl

Removable vinyl is just what it’s described as. It’s made to adhere, but will peel up easily. You can do a lot with this type of vinyl. From wall stickers, to labels, to stickers, stencils, and more! You can even use this vinyl for permanent projects as long as you seal it correctly (more on that later!)

So there you go! Now you know the basics about each type of vinyl! I hope this helps you get started on your next project!
